The Bamboo Solutions' aggregation solution is based on a shared architecture called Schemas. The Schemas stores the query that defines what lists and items are contained in each rollup. To build the Schemas, the user uses the Bamboo List Rollup Schema Designer, an intuitive interface that allows users to define what lists are rolled up including optional filtering. Part of the process of building the schema is defining the aggregation service to use. Bamboo List Rollup supplies 2 types of aggregation services:

Bamboo Aggregation Service: This is a proprietary service that allows users to aggregate lists and columns of any type for ultimate flexibility but at a cost of slower performance.
SharePoint Aggregation Service: Utilizing the method item query, part of SharePoint Object Model, Bamboo List Rollup can aggregate lists of same type with very fast performance.

When the user completes creating their List Rollup Schema using Bamboo List Rollup Schema Designer, the schema query xml is saved to a SharePoint List called Bamboo List Rollup Configuration. This custom list allows the second Web Part, Bamboo List Rollup Grid View, or other Bamboo Web Parts that can consume Bamboo List Rollup Schemas, to retrieve the data query of a selected Schema. This method allows users to quickly update content gathered by a List Rollup Schema and have the update immediately be reflected in all connected Web Parts.
