List Search Web Part: Step-by-step Guide
Simple Search Web Part Overview: Search within a Tasks List

This article presents an overview of how to use the Simple Search Web Part to constrain your search within a SharePoint Tasks List.

Step 1:

Install the Bamboo Simple Search Web Part according to instructions in the Application Notes.  After the Web Part is installed, select Modify Shared Web Part from the menu accessed at the upper right corner of the Web Part. This menu is only accessible by users with authority to modify the page.

  • Select the name of your Tasks List to be searched.
  • Select the columns that you want the end users to search on.

Step 2:

Select the other options that you want to use:

  • Whether you want the search parameters to be ORed (a hit with any parameters) or ANDed (a hit requires all parameters).
  • A View that can be used as the template to display Search Results.  The system uses this view to display the columns and order of the List data.
  • Whether you want the Search Results to be displayed as part of the Search Web Part, or on a new page.
  • Whether you want to Show the default value for choice columns.
  • Whether you want to enable Keyword search, which is the full text search based on the SharePoint search engine.

Save your configuration settings by clicking Apply and then OK.

Step 3:

You should now see the List Search Web Part. The users should only see and be able to search on the fields that you specified in the step above. Note:  If you enter criteria in the “Search in All columns for” text box, the Web Part performs a full-text search in all columns of the selected List. If the Search in Content check box in the tool part is selected, the Web Part will also do the content search in addition to free-text search in all columns.

Step 4:

Enter a search term and press Search.  Your Search Results are displayed below the Web Part.

Step 5:

Click Print Preview to print your Search Results.
